Oliver Messiaen

Olivier Messiaen (b. Avignon, France10 December 1908, d. 1992) Organist at the Church of the Trinity in Paris from 1931 until his death. Founded "La jeune France" with Jolivet, Braudrier, and Lesur, 1936. Teacher at the Paris Conservatory from 1942 (of composition from 1966). His pupils include Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Iannis Xenakis. Has employed techniques derived from a wide variety of materials, including liturgical chant, Oriental rhythms and bird calls.
